Chapter 37:

Charity

Six large trucks followed Shane Yu’s car, each carrying a banner announcing the donation of supplies from Yuanmingyang Logistics Company. The supplies included books, bread, milk, and clothing.

Just then, a Toyota Prado pulled up, and a man in a blue striped suit with a friendly face stepped out. He was very refined and smiled as he looked at Shane Yu’s car.

Shane Yu got out of her car and greeted him with a smile. “Mr. Lu, what a coincidence!”

“Isn’t this Mr. Yu? What a coincidence.” Mr. Lu walked over and greeted her warmly.

Four more large trucks arrived behind Mr. Lu. The banner read: Ocean E-commerce Platform Donates Supplies.

The school principal immediately greeted them warmly, inviting the two successful individuals into the house.

“Wait for me here. If you’re not feeling well, you can wait in the car,” Shane Yu instructed me.

“Okay!” I nodded obediently.

Mr. Lu glanced at me and smiled, then went inside with Shane Yu.

“Mr. Yu’s woman is truly beautiful!” Mr. Lu praised Sharon Yao.

Shane Yu nodded, smiling warmly. He thought to himself: You old lecher, what business is it of yours whether my woman is beautiful or not?

I looked at the children in the impoverished mountain area before me. They were like flowers battered by wind and rain. Their clothes were patched and worn, their pants uneven, their faces dirty. Each child was very thin, sweat beading on their faces. They had their disheveled hair swept back, revealing rather pretty little faces and bright, dark eyes.

I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness for them.

I took out some candy from my bag and gave it to them. Happy smiles bloomed on their little faces.

I then noticed a particularly thin and small boy, about eight years old, chewing on a table.

“Why are you chewing on the table?” I went over and asked with concern.

The little boy, with his dark face and big, watery eyes, looked at me and said in a small voice, “I’m hungry.”

I suddenly remembered there was some food in the car—bread, milk, and sterile eggs that Shane Yu had bought for me that morning.

I took his little hand and said gently, “I have food. Come with me, I’ll get it for you.”

The little boy shook his head, his eyes filled with fear and apprehension. He carefully pulled his hand back, afraid of getting my hands dirty, and whispered, “I’m dirty, don’t get you dirty, sister.”

I didn’t understand. They should have so many people helping them! Why were they so hungry they were gnawing on the table?

“Don’t the supplies they donated reach you?” I asked, puzzled.

The little boy looked at me with his bright, dark eyes, but didn’t answer.

I went out and took the bread, milk, and eggs from the car.

I handed them to the little boy, who took them and gave me a sweet smile, a smile as beautiful as a blooming flower. “Thank you, sister!” The other children looked on longingly, also wanting to eat. The little boy shared his bread with them, and they all ate together, smiling.

I hadn’t brought much cash with me; I found a little over 100 yuan in my bag. I handed the money to the little boy eating at the table.

The little boy shook his head, hesitant to accept the money. His face turned bright red, like a ripe apple.

“This is for you, sister. Take it. If I have the chance, I’ll come see you again.”

Then I took a wet wipe from my bag, knelt down, and wiped his little face. His face looked much better after it was clean.

Shane Yu came out after her conversation. Seeing Sharon Yao kneeling and wiping the face of a child from a poor mountain area, she felt a pang of jealousy. Sharon Yao had never been so attentive to me before.

Shane Yu walked straight over and took my hand.

“Go wait for me in the car. I’ll leave after I finish taking pictures,” Shane Yu whispered in my ear.

I stood up, looked at Shane Yu, and nodded obediently.

As I walked, I kept looking back at the group of thin, frail children. They were smiling happily and posing for photos with the philanthropists. I didn’t know if we’d actually receive the supplies.

I went back to my car, turned on my phone’s GPS, and noted the location of this mountainous area. I thought I’d have the chance to come back with Snow Chen and the others sometime to help children in impoverished mountain areas.

On the way back, Shane Yu frowned at me and asked, “What’s wrong? Feeling sorry for the children in the mountains?”

I nodded, then asked doubtfully, “I’m just curious, it’s really heartwarming that you’re helping them. But will they even receive all these supplies?”

Shane Yu replied nonchalantly, “Whether they actually receive them or not is not my responsibility. I’m only responsible for delivering the things here; what happens afterward is none of my concern.”

I couldn’t help but sigh, “They really are quite pitiful. Compared to them, I think I’m doing pretty well.”

Shane Yu suddenly became dissatisfied, raising his voice, “What are you saying? You’re comparing yourself to them? Have I been unkind to you? Look at the clothes you’re wearing; every single one costs more than a family’s expenses for a year and a half!”

Then he leaned close to my ear and whispered, “You only need to serve me well; what’s there to be unwilling about?”

I was taken aback by Shane’s words. Startled by Yu’s sudden change in mood, I quickly explained, “I… I was just saying it casually, I didn’t mean anything by it. And I didn’t say I was doing badly. I’m doing very well…”

Shane Yu seemed to realize his reaction had been a bit too extreme.

He paused for a moment, then his tone softened slightly as he said, “I’ll take you home tonight, but you have to come back to the villa with me. If you behave well, you can go back to school tomorrow.”

I nodded and replied, “Okay, I understand.” Then I leaned back in my seat, closed my eyes, and tried to take a nap.

I really couldn’t be bothered to talk to Shane Yu anymore; I felt like we were completely different people.

His values were so different from mine…
